much! But, with so much talk in the media about candle
safety how can I burn candles safely?
Answer:
There are several ways to ensure your safely when burning
candles. Here are just a few! Remember use common
sense.
Never
leave a candle burning unattended.
Keep
all candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Keep
your candles away from flammable materials.
Always
burn candles in a proper holder.
Always
burn candles on a heat resistant surface.
Extinguish
taper or pillar candles when they get within 2" of
their holders.
Discontinue
use of container candle when 1/2" of wax remains.
Discontinue
use of container candle if container is cracked.
Question: How can I get the
maximum from my candle?
Answer:
Here are some great tips on how to properly use your candles.
Keep
the wick trimmed to 1/4"at all times! (Don't deviate
from this!)
Keep
the wick centered at all times. If the wick falls out
of place use a pencil to center it again. This will
keep the container or holder from cracking.
If
your flame does not stand straight up you may have a
draft. Try moving the candle to a different
location. Drafts may cause the candle to burn uneven
or even crack the container.
When
possible always snuff out your candles.
When
blowing out a candle, hold your finder in front of the flame
and blow at it. The air will flow around the finger
and extinguish the candle from both sides. This will
prevent hot wax from splattering.
If
a wick becomes too short to light, carve away enough wax to
expose the fresh wick, then trim 1/4" off the top of
the candle and burn the candle to reform its appearance.
Before
a party, light and extinguish the candles. They'll
light more quickly and easily later.
Try
refrigerating your candles before use. This will cause
them to burn more slowly and evenly. Wrap them in foil
or plastic first to prevent moisture from getting into the
wick.
Keep
the wax pool free of foreign objects such as wick trimmings
and matches.
Question: I like to buy my
candles in bulk. How should I store my candles for later
use?
Answer: You
should always store your candles flat, and in a cool, dark,
place. Never put candles in a window or expose to direct
sunlight. It will cause them to fade.
Question: How can I get
remaining wax out of the old candle holders?
Answer:
There are a couple of ways of doing this. You can put a drop
or two of water in the bottom of the votive cup prior to placing a
candle in it which makes clean up a snap. (beware some candle
wicks are not completing primed before they are used and will soak
up the water and make the candle wick sparkle when it
burns.) However my preference is to place the candle holder
in the freezer for about 20 minutes. The left over wax will
fall right out.
Question: Some of my
pillars get finger prints on them. How can I make them more
attractive?
Answer:
Clean soiled candles with a piece of nylon or use a touch of salad
oil on a soft cloth.
